Lyman Continuum Emission Escaping from Luminous Green Pea Galaxies at z = 0.5

چکیده

Compact starburst galaxies are thought to include many or most of the from which substantial Lyman continuum emission can escape into intergalactic medium. Li and Malkan (2018) used SDSS photometry find a population such at z~0.5. They were discovered by their extremely strong [OIII]4959+5007 lines, produce clearly detectable excess brightness in i bandpass, compared with surrounding filters. We therefore HST/COS spectrograph observe two newly i-band around limits. One has strongly detected below its limit, corresponding relative fraction ionizing photons 20+/-2%. The other, is less compact UV imaging, 2-sigma upper limit <5%. Before spectroscopy, existing data could not distinguish these galaxies. Although sample hardly sufficient for statistical analysis, it shows possibility that some [OIII] emitters as class have escaping. differences might be determined luck our particular viewing geometry. Obtaining HST revealed Lyman-continuum emitting galaxy differs having no central absorption prominent Ly{\alpha} line profile. other target, escaping continuum, more common double-peaked emission.

The Lyman continuum radiation escaping from galaxies

The Hα luminosity density of galaxies is used to calculate the local diffuse radiation field at the Lyman limit as resulting from star formation in the universe. The fraction of Lyman continuum radiation leaking out from galaxies through their neutral hydrogen is the most uncertain parameter of the calculation. A comparison of the diffuse radiation predicted from galaxies with that measured fro...

CONTINUUM EMISSION FROM GALAXIES AT z ≃ 3

We report the detection of significant Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of 29 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with redshifts 〈z〉 = 3.40 ± 0.09. After correction for opacity due to intervening absorption using a new composite QSO spectrum evaluated at the same redshift, the ratio of emergent flux density at 1500 Å in the rest frame to that in the Lyman continuum is L(1500)/L(900) = 4.6...

An HST Search for Lyman Continuum Emission From Galaxies at 1 . 1 < z < 1 . 4

If enough of their Lyman limit continuum escapes, star-forming galaxies could be significant contributors to the cosmic background of ionizing photons. To investigate this possibility, we obtained the first deep imaging in the far ultraviolet of eleven bright blue galaxies at intermediate redshift (1.1 < z < 1.4) with the STIS FUV MAMA detector on the Hubble Space Telescope. No Lyman continuum ...

Narrowband Lyman - Continuum Imaging of Galaxies at Z ∼ 2 . 85

We present results from a survey for z ∼ 2.85 Lyman-Continuum (LyC) emission in the HS1549+1933 field and place constraints on the amount of ionizing radiation escaping from starforming galaxies. Using a custom narrowband filter (NB3420) tuned to wavelengths just below the Lyman limit at z ≥ 2.82, we probe the LyC spectral region of 49 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and 91 Lyα-emitters (LAEs) spec...

Upper limit on Lyman continuum flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3 using VLT narrow - band photometry ⋆

We have performed narrow-band imaging observations with the Very Large Telescope, aimed at detecting the Lyman continuum (LC) flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3. We do not find any significant LC flux from our sample of two galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South, at z = 3.170 and 3.275. The corresponding lower limits on the F1400/F900 flux density (per Hz) ratio are 15.6 and 10.2 (3-σ confid...
